A great pen is about more than how it looks on a desk or in a photo. It matters how it feels in your hand, how smoothly it writes, and how satisfying it is every time you click it open.
When we started designing the Modern Fuel Side Click Pen, we knew we didn't want to make just another machined pen. We wanted something that kept the clean, minimalist look our customers already loved, but paired it with a mechanism that felt genuinely fun to use.
That turned out to be a much bigger challenge than it sounds.
The Challenge of Building a Better Mechanism
A smooth, reliable side click mechanism is fairly easy to create when you're working with molded plastic parts. Plastic gives you a lot of freedom with shape and keeps manufacturing relatively simple.
Machined metal changes everything.
Once you're working with solid metal, every part has to be designed more carefully. Tolerances matter more. Material choice matters more. Even tiny details that might not matter in a plastic design can have a big impact on how the mechanism feels and performs.
Instead of treating that as a limitation, we saw it as the whole point.
From the beginning, we had a clear set of goals:
Getting all of those things to work together took a lot of iteration, testing, and refinement.
Refining Every Detail
The Side Click Pen could have been released earlier in the process.
But we kept going.
We adjusted tolerances, tested different materials, explored mechanical variations, and kept fine-tuning the feel of the click. We also improved our manufacturing process along the way, because the more we learned, the more we wanted to improve.
What came out of that process is a pen that feels easy and natural to use, while still having the strength and durability you'd expect from an all-metal writing instrument.
Sometimes the smallest changes end up making the biggest difference.
A Design That Feels Familiar
Even though the mechanism was new, we wanted the pen itself to feel unmistakably Modern Fuel.
That meant keeping the clean machined lines, the balanced profile, and our signature grooved grip pattern that so many customers have told us they love.
The Side Click Pen is available in four premium metals, each with its own weight, feel, and character as it ages over time.
We never wanted it to feel flashy or overdesigned. The goal was something timeless—something that feels right the moment you pick it up.
Testing for a Lifetime of Use
A side click pen is only as good as the mechanism inside it.
We knew that if this pen was going to spend years in pockets, bags, desks, and workshops, it had to hold up to real use. So we built our own testing system to make sure it could.
Using a custom-designed fixture and an Arduino-controlled test rig, we ran multiple prototypes through thousands of activation cycles. We tested different designs, materials, finishes, and treatments to see what performed best over time.
That process gave us real data to work from, which meant we could make better decisions before the pen ever reached production.
We didn't want to rely on assumptions. We wanted to know how it would actually perform.
Why We Made Two Versions
The Side Click Pen started out as a pen with a clip.
Then, during pre-production testing, we began experimenting with clipless versions.
What we found surprised us. Without the clip, the pen had a cleaner silhouette and a different feel in the hand. It wasn't better or worse—it was just different. Each version had its own strengths, and each one felt appealing for different reasons.
Rather than choose one and leave the other behind, we decided to offer both.
Bringing Manufacturing In-House
One of the biggest changes in Modern Fuel's history happened while we were developing this pen.
We made the decision to bring much of our machining operations in-house.
That change has had a huge impact.
By producing our own components, we can monitor quality throughout the entire process and make adjustments quickly when needed. It also gives us more control over lead times and reduces our dependence on outside suppliers.
Just as importantly, it helps us manage costs while still holding every product to the standards we expect from Modern Fuel.
And at the end of the day, it gives us the freedom to build products the way we believe they should be built.
