A bolt action pen is simply where the bolt on the side of the pen is used to push a refill cartridge down and lock it into place. It's an incredibly reliable mechanism and just as satisfying to click into place. A well-made bolt action pen can withstand millions and millions of cycles and last more than a lifetime.
First the body and slider are cut out of a solid bar of premium stainless steel independently in the USA. The clip is machined out of Grade 5 Titanium to give it the perfect flex and strength. For most manufacturers this would be “good enough” to assemble and ship. But, for Modern Fuel, we want to ensure the pencil is flawless, so we take it one step further.
Once we have the body and clip, we put them through a custom multi-step finishing process right here in San Antonio. This gives the pen its beautiful brushed look and ensures an exact fit between the two.
With the pen fully finished, we carefully inspect each part and ensure it meets our extremely tight standards for release. Many of the pieces are rejected, but the ones which pass are hand assembled by our small team and then fully tested.
Finally, we review every order and use a precision fiber laser engraver to customize pen bodies as requested. Then, your unique pen is hand-cleaned, inspected one final time to exacting standards, and packaged up for shipment.

What are the dimensions of The Pen?
Length: 132.65mm (5.2 in)
Diameter: 9.3mm (.37 in)
Is The Pen heavy?
It has a reasonable heft to it as it is made out of solid steel. It weighs approximately 42 grams (1.5oz)
Is it slippery without a grip?
The pen has a smooth brushed finish, but is not slippery to grip. The surface finish and weight of the pencil means you need less grip to hold it resulting in a more relaxed grip.
What grade of Ti (nickel content because of a nickel allergy)?
We use Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5).
What grade of stainless steel do you use?
We use SS303.
What happens if I break it?
Our 100 year guarantee covers all craftsmanship and materials. If the pen breaks for any reason under normal use, we will happily fix or replace it.
Why is it so expensive?
The largest driver of price is simply the extremely high quality materials used in the pen. Instead of cheap plastic parts in the pen, we use all metal parts which will withstand the use of millions of cycles.
Lastly, the sophisticated equipment used to make these costs several hundred thousands of dollars each. These are not the kind of thing you can make in your garage, and it takes years of experience to be able to design and produce them to the same level of quality we aspire.
In short, attention to detail and quality materials are unfortunately expensive. We believe the quality and life of the pen more than makes up for the cost.
